Vic Daniels, Co-founder of GRV Media, one of Europe’s largest independent online sports publishers, didn’t embark on his entrepreneurial journey with the roar of the crowd in mind.
His roots lie in the world of finance, a realm seemingly distant from the fast-paced, adrenaline fuelled world of digital sports media. Yet, it was this unlikely beginning that ultimately shaped his entrepreneurial spirit and laid the foundation for his remarkable success.
“GRV is run with an ‘every day is day one’ philosophy,” Daniels explains. “We’re not big believers in rigid business plans. We believe in agility, in being able to pivot and seize opportunities as they arise. The media landscape is constantly evolving, and a static plan can quickly become obsolete.” This philosophy has been the cornerstone of GRV Media’s evolution, guiding the company from its early days in finance publishing to its current position as a dominant force in the sports media landscape.
The company’s success hinges on a potent combination of factors. Firstly, there’s an unwavering focus on the reader. GRV Media understands that its audience is at the heart of everything they do. This translates into a commitment to producing high-quality, engaging content that resonates with sports fans across diverse platforms.

Secondly, data plays a crucial role in driving decision-making. Advanced analytics are utilised to understand reader behaviour, identify emerging trends, and refine content strategies. This data-driven approach ensures that GRV Media is not just publishing content but creating content that is actively consumed and appreciated by its audience.
Thirdly, GRV Media places a strong emphasis on talent development. Recognising the importance of a skilled and motivated workforce, the company has fostered a culture that values collaboration, creativity, and continuous learning. This emphasis on human capital is evident in initiatives like The Writer Lab, a unique programme designed to bridge the gap between academic training and the realities of the modern sports media landscape.

“Many universities are equipping graduates to do jobs that mostly don’t exist,” Daniels observes. “The traditional journalism curriculum often falls short of preparing students for the demands of the digital age. The Writer Lab aims to fill this gap by providing practical, real-world experience and insights into the business of sports media.”
The programme offers aspiring journalists a unique opportunity to learn from industry experts, develop essential skills such as SEO, social media marketing, and data analysis, and gain valuable experience in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. This investment in talent not only benefits individual careers but also strengthens GRV Media’s position as a leader in the sports media industry.
For aspiring sports journalists, Daniels offers a blend of encouragement and realism. “Writing engaging content, being creative, having a hunger to learn and a determination to succeed are all essential,” he emphasises. “Resilience is a must, together with commercial awareness.
Understanding the business side of the industry is crucial for long-term success.” He also cautions against succumbing to the pressure and feeling overwhelmed before even taking the first step. “If you are feeling overwhelmed before you even break into the industry, then it’s probably not for you,” he advises.

Daniels’ journey underscores several key lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs and industry leaders alike. Firstly, the importance of adaptability and a willingness to embrace change cannot be overstated. The media landscape is in a constant state of flux, and those who can navigate these shifts successfully are more likely to thrive.
Secondly, a strong company culture built on collaboration, trust, and a commitment to employee growth is essential for attracting and retaining top talent.
Finally, investing in the development of future generations is not only a social responsibility but also a strategic imperative for long-term success.
As GRV Media continues to expand its reach and influence with 11 of their websites hitting new highs, it serves as a testament to the power of embracing change, prioritising people, and leveraging data to navigate the complexities of the modern media landscape.
Vic Daniels stated: “Revenue for our own websites increased 167.1% in January, compared to January 2024. Company profit before tax came in six times higher. We have had a very strong start to the year, and are well placed to hit our challenging business objectives, which include hiring an additional 100 people and increasing quality page views to 2,000,000,000 in 2025.”
Daniels’ story serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs, demonstrating that with a vision, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to adapt, even those from seemingly unrelated fields can achieve remarkable success in the dynamic world of digital media.
