In the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of UK sports communications, MatchFit is strategically positioning itself as a trailblazer, driven by a steadfast commitment to authentic storytelling and a bold regional expansion. The agency’s recent establishment of a Northern division in Manchester marks a significant milestone, underscoring its dedication to fostering deeper connections with regional markets and championing the power of “earned-first” thinking.

For those unfamiliar, MatchFit distinguishes itself as a specialist sports communications agency, empowering iconic brands and world-class rights holders to articulate their narratives with impactful resonance. Their core services, encompassing strategic PR, reputation management, influencer marketing, and dynamic studio content creation, are grounded in a strategic approach that prioritises genuine engagement with target audiences. MatchFit’s impressive client roster, featuring industry giants such as The FA, Manchester City, Topps, LiveScore, and MatchWornShirt, underscores their ability to navigate diverse and high-profile projects with finesse.

A testament to their impactful work is The FA’s #LetGirlsPlay campaign, a powerful initiative that drove significant social change through strategic communications. This campaign, culminating in a historic moment with over half a million girls participating simultaneously, exemplifies MatchFit’s dedication to purpose-driven initiatives. Furthermore, their award-winning campaign for Topps’ UEFA Euro 2024 launch, featuring a striking 12-metre mural of Andy Robertson and engaging content with prominent personalities, showcases their mastery in creating integrated and high-impact consumer campaigns.

MatchFit’s guiding philosophy, “we want everyone to love sport as much as we do,” is deeply rooted in five core values: growth, expertise, transparency, togetherness, and bravery. These values permeate the agency’s culture, shaping their approach to every project and fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.

The strategic decision to establish a Manchester office, under the leadership of Director Cherrelle Jefferson, highlights MatchFit’s forward-thinking vision. Manchester, a vibrant hub of sports culture and talent, offers proximity to key clients and access to a thriving regional market. Jefferson’s ambition to broaden MatchFit’s client base to include lifestyle brands with sports partnerships reflects the agency’s commitment to innovation and expanding their reach.

“There are a few reasons that make Manchester a great location for MatchFit’s new Northern division: being geographically closer to our existing clients, Manchester being a melting pot for sports culture, and the north’s impressive pool for industry talent,” Jefferson explains. She elaborates, “The north has such an impressive pool of creatives, strategists, press officers and beyond and we want to work with them all!” She also points out, “Manchester offers a unique blend of sporting heritage, passionate fan culture, and a rapidly growing business ecosystem, making it a perfect location for sports communications.”

Co-founder Donald Parish emphasises the strategic timing of the expansion, driven by the agency’s growth and vision. “Manchester opens MatchFit up to the very best industry talent outside London, and builds a strategic hub to enhance existing client relationships,” he states. This move is part of a broader leadership development, with Rob Leary’s promotion to Director in London, ensuring seamless operations across both locations. Parish adds, “Our expansion into Manchester is the biggest moment in the MatchFit evolution so far, and we see this as a fantastic first step.”

MatchFit distinguishes itself through its diverse team, which blends expertise from sports, tech, entertainment, and fashion. This unique blend enables the agency to handle a wide spectrum of projects, from high-impact consumer PR to corporate governance. The agency’s focus on “earned-first” thinking, coupled with integrated campaigns that leverage influencer partnerships and digital content, sets them apart in the competitive UK market.

Parish also notes that “The biggest change in the last five years however, has been the pace in the rise of influencer and creator campaigns, and the blurring of some of the traditional rules of engagement,” and that MatchFit’s team is at the forefront of this shift. He also stated, “Whilst the media landscaping is changing, and in the case of traditional media this often means shrinking, we believe it only increases the need for specialist media relations expertise, to deliver value for our clients.”

Jefferson also spoke of the importance of purpose-driven stories. “For me, one of the biggest trends I’m seeing is the shift towards more purpose-driven storytelling in sports communications. Consumers expect brands and stakeholders to stand for something beyond the game – be it inclusivity, mental health, sustainability, or social impact – and rightly so! Authenticity is key, which is why brands should always be leaning on the experts in the field to craft compelling narratives around these themes to make sure they get it right.”

Looking ahead, MatchFit aims to continue delivering impactful work, fostering talent, and championing the role of communications in the sports industry. Their commitment to regional presence and authentic storytelling positions them as a leader in the evolving sports communications landscape. As Parish notes, “It is important we are able to authentically understand the communities and audiences that we connect our clients with.” And that “To continue doing brilliant work, to empower our people to grow, and to fight for the role of communications at the top table of the sports industry.” Jefferson also states that “As a woman in a leadership role within sports communications – an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated – one of my key personal goals is to inspire and empower the next generation of female talent.”

MatchFit’s expansion into Manchester is a testament to their ambition and strategic vision. By embracing regional opportunities, prioritising purpose-driven narratives, and staying true to their core values, they are poised to make a significant and lasting impact on the future of UK sports communications.
