Welcome to Industry Insider by Behind Sport. In our latest feature, Michelle Owen, Reporter & Presenter for Sky Sports talks to us about her career in sport.

Tell us about yourself, what is your current role and what roles have you done previously?

Hello I’m Michelle Owen and I’m a Reporter and Presenter. I’ve been reporting for Sky Sports Soccer Saturday for 7 years now. I also report and present for Sky Sports News and sometimes for Sky Football. I report for 5 Live and present a Bristol City podcast as well as carrying out interviews for Aston Villa TV. Recently I’ve covered Colin presenting EFL on Quest – the highlights show. I also do some freelance bits for other companies hosting and interviewing.

What do you do in your current role?

Report from grounds across the country, live games reporting the latest action and also presenting.

What does a normal week look like for you?

Every week is different which I love. Usually though it consists of a couple of games, recording the podcast and perhaps an interview or two.

How did you end up where you are right now? When did you know you wanted to work in sport?

I began in radio. I volunteered from the age of 16 in local/hospital/community radio which I carried on through University. I did lots and lots and lots of work experience anywhere that would take me! I found my voice on student radio and learned lots of lessons- I’m still learning so many as I go now. I was due to start journalism school after University but landed a job at a radio station I’d been volunteering at. While here I reported from various games in South Wales, I carried on presenting at different stations and got a break reporting on ISDN games on Soccer Saturday. I then became an invision reporter and things went from there as I made the decision to transition from radio presenting to football reporting & presenting.

I started presenting on Sky Sports News alongside my other roles.  Recently being asked to host the Championship Highlights on Quest was very exciting. It was always a dream to do this job having followed football from such an early age, even though my family have no interest in the game, it’s been a love since the start for me. I’m incredibly lucky.

What’s been your favourite moment whilst working in sports?

There’s been a few but one that sticks in the memory is Aston Villa 5 Nottingham Forest 5 a couple of years ago. It had everything and was such fun to report on!

What do you think is next for your industry?

It’s evolving with the times. I’m enjoying seeing more women gradually covering football which is great – not because of tokenism but because they’re good enough. People like things instantly too nowadays which is why I think shows like Soccer Saturday have longevity. We bring you moments as they happen. Personally I love watching highlights too.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to work in the sports industry?

Work harder than anyone around you and be yourself – that’s two! But there’s only one you.
