Welcome to our Industry Insider feature, this week we’re speaking to Mike Hall, Sports Correspondent for ITV Granada Reports.

Tell us about yourself, what is your current role and what roles have you done previously?

My name is Mike Hall and I’m a presenter and sports correspondent for ITV Granada Reports – the ITV regional news service in the North West of England. I’ve been here more than 20 years. Previously I worked at a number of local newspapers including Warrington Guardian, Bury Times and Bolton News.

What do you do in your current role?

It’s my job to produce and present a nightly sports desk on ITV Granada Reports. I also occasionally present the main programme.

What does a normal week look like for you?

It’s my job to make sure we are across all of the important, breaking sports stories in the region and that we give fair and balanced coverage to the North West’s sports teams and individuals. We are not a sports programme, but a news programme with a sports section within it, which means we can’t cover everything, although we try our best to. I decide which stories make it into our sports desk each night, I build the running order, cut the pictures, write the links and then head into the studio at 6pm each night to present. The cycle is repeated on a daily basis but, as you might imagine, every day is completely different. I feel incredibly lucky to work in a region which boasts some of the world’s biggest clubs and sports stars.

How did you end up where you are right now? When did you know you wanted to work in sport?

I always enjoyed English at school and knew from an early age that I wanted to be involved in writing. I also had a passion for sport so decided why not try to combine the two? I loved working in newspapers – writing stories, covering sports events, designing pages and coming up with headlines – but when the chance came to try my hand in TV I jumped at it. When I first arrived at Granada TV I worked as a researcher. It was a year or two before they let me loose on TV!

What are you excited about in your industry at the moment?

Technology is improving rapidly, meaning we can broadcast live from just about anywhere with very little kit. Cameras are better than ever before and with the likes of GoPros and drones we can capture pictures that haven’t been possible in the past. It’s a great time to work in TV.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to work in the sports industry?

If sports journalism interests you and is a passion then you should go for it. Get the right qualifications under your belt. And be patient – getting that first job may take time. Try to gain as much work experience as you can and make as many contacts as you can.
