Welcome to Industry Insider by Behind Sport. Our latest guest is the Managing Director of SportsPro Media, Nick Meacham!

Tell us about yourself, what is your current role and what roles have you done previously?

Hello I’m Nick Meacham and I’m the Managing Director of SportsPro Media. I’m an Aussie who’s been living in London for over 11 years and working at SportsPro for 10 of those. I’ve spent most of my professional career in roles across either sports or media so working at SportsPro provides a perfect convergence of my previous roles and education. I also sit on the board of the British Volleyball Federation as a Senior Independent Director.

What do you do in your current role?

At SportsPro, I’m responsible for the overall performance of the business, which means working across marketing, sales, editorial, operations, finance, HR, strategy, etc. And as a business we produce magazines, websites, social media and events covering across the business of sports, so my position is very much a jack of all trades role to keep connected with all the moving parts we have.

What does a normal week look like for you?

Lots of meetings with the different department heads, and project teams for our events and new projects we’re working on. Working in a media and events business like ours, it’s important to talk and meet regularly with industry executives to understand the key topics and challenges across the industry and how they’re evolving. We also run a lot of events (currently fortnightly online due to the pandemic), so I’m also involved with those as and when they’re happening.

How did you end up where you are right now? When did you know you wanted to work in sport?

Going through high school I always wanted to have a career in the industry, so pursued that through my degree at university and haven’t moved too far away from what I set out to do all those years ago. With roles in publishing and running sports events back in Australia behind me, I initially moved to London with the view of staying short term, but was fortunate to fall into a role with SportsPro in my 2nd year, and even more fortunate they were willing to sponsor me to stay as my visa was expiring. I feel I was very lucky to join SportsPro, and after 10 years with the business still very fortunate to be where I am.

What are you excited about in your industry at the moment?

It’s never been a more exciting time to be in the industry. Well exciting wouldn’t be the right word during this current pandemic, but more generally the impact technology and innovation are having on the industry is changing the shape of it so rapidly you can’t not enjoy being involved. And the best part is we’ve only scratched the surface. We’ve only started the journey of digitising sports; we’ve only started the process of globalising audiences. We’re in the new age of athletes building brands and powerful media businesses. Sponsorship is at the tipping point of truly understanding its value in the industry. It’s a great time to be sitting in the middle of all of this disruption like we do within a media business like SportsPro.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to work in the sports industry?

It’s a very competitive marketplace. Do what you can to get a start. Try to connect with people in the industry and learn. Sports is unlike any other industry and it takes time to truly understand the dynamics until you’re in it so getting your foot in the door is key. There’s another way of thinking with some people in the industry in that it’s better to learn some hard skills in a more corporate setting that translates before moving into sports. I like that in concept, but I think it could be a bit idealistic to map out a journey that thoughtfully. Ultimately, be focussed, keep learning, keep connecting, work hard and you’ll give yourself the best chance possible.
