Tell us about yourself, what is your current role and what roles have you done previously?

I’m Rob Glover and I have recently graduated from Staffordshire University, having completed my BA Sports Journalism degree earlier this year. I had spent the 2019/20 season as a Media and Communications Intern at Stoke City, and I’m now seeking my first full time role within the industry. To gain additional experience during a time where job opportunities are so limited, I currently occupy the role of Social Media Producer for National League North club, Curzon Ashton FC. In order to ensure I continue to have my foot firmly in the door, for when the right role arises. I have also had experience working with York City FC, the Yorkshire Post and Kidsgrove Athletic FC, while also being published by regional newspapers including the Stoke Sentinel and the Halifax Courier.

What do you do in your current role?

In my current role at Curzon Ashton, I spend my week producing content for the club’s social media platforms, ranging from video, to graphic design and written content. I have spent a lot of my time sinking my teeth into the marketing side, creating consistent branding for the club, during a time where I am looking to drive engagement and encourage donations to the club’s Crowdfunder initiative, through which they look to raise £10’000 to secure the club’s future beyond the pandemic; and I’m really proud to see how quickly they are progressing towards that target. This may just be a temporary role for myself, but there is plenty of discussion going on behind the scenes surrounding next season, whenever that may be, and I’m hoping to have stamped my mark on the club’s output, even if I have moved on come the start of the 2020/21 campaign.


What does a normal week look like for you?

To be honest, as with the majority of people, it’s currently quite quiet, with limited projects to focus on, but a few months ago when I was with Stoke, my normal week revolved around covering one or two under-23s matchdays on Monday or Friday evenings, a first-team matchday on a Saturday afternoon, and one day per week spent in the office at the Bet365 Stadium, producing written content for the club website and matchday programme, while also covering press conferences and occasionally attending community events alongside the club’s foundation. All this, alongside two days of lectures per week had allowed me to get an idea of the demanding pace of this non-stop industry which continues to excite me.


How did you end up where you are right now? When did you know you wanted to work in sport?

I had always been obsessed with football, to the point where it was always going to be something I couldn’t just ignore, but I hadn’t fallen upon the possibility of pursuing a career in the media until I studied media studies and photography four years ago during my time at college, but since then this end destination has been the driving force of the hard work I have put into my degree and I have never been more certain of where I want to be, and I am so willing to push myself to get there. I think at this stage, I’d have been hard pushed to top having already worked for side competing in the Championship, while learning from some great professionals, so I am hopeful that when life returns to normal that I can get involved with a club or publication, on a full-time basis.


What are you excited about in your industry at the moment?

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the industry for me currently, as I have begun to become more involved and engrossed in the world of sports media, is the constant advancements within digital media. I find myself enjoying monitoring the social trends that develop across the sports social scene, and seeing what other clubs and organisations are doing allows me to take inspiration from and look to expand on what may or may not already be out there. Since joining Curzon Ashton in early April, we have already enjoyed engagement with the likes of AS Roma and FC Schalke 04, which has seen a club of our size, be put in front of the eyes of major international audiences that eclipse our current, organic following.


What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to work in the sports industry?

Obviously I’m still in the very early days of my career, but I think one of the most effective ways for people wanting to work within the sports industry to gain experience that will offer them that first step on the ladder, is to get in touch with your local non-league club, I did the same during my second year of university. Volunteer led clubs are always looking for help, and it’s a sure fire way to access creative freedom on a media front that you perhaps won’t witness again during your career as you progress up the pyramid, to a professional level. Basically, get as much work experience as humanly possible, it’s important to be as adaptable and multi-skilled as possible and if you have a niche sport, run with that, because as I am finding out, everyone wants to work in football!
