Welcome to Industry Insider by Behind Sport! Our latest guest is Sports Journalist, Will Jones.

Tell us about yourself, what is your current role and what roles have you done previously?

I’m Will Jones, a 20-year-old Sports Media student, pending graduation at the University of Chichester, originally from the Ribble Valley and an aspiring Sports Journalist. I’m currently a board member for the Bolton Wanderers Supporters Trust and formerly a senior writer & podcast host for fan-site ‘Lion of Vienna Suite’. I’ve also had media-related work experience opportunities with The Professional Footballer’s Association, Triple S Sports & Entertainment Communications – Soccer Aid, International Sports Management and The Coaching Manual.

What do you do in your current role?

In my day to day role as a BWFCST board member, I am in regular contact with the rest of the board and  working closely with Bolton Wanderers Football Club on behalf of the fans to strengthen the relationship between the club and the community, specifically via public relations, media & marketing.

What does a normal week look like for you?

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, my routine has been very different and has been entirely digital. Whilst much of my work can be done remotely anyway, it’s much easier and personally preferable to interact with the relevant people & organisations. Improvisations have therefore had to be made in that emails, phone calls and video conferences are now my go-to outlets where board administration is concerned. From waking up to going to sleep, I’m online addressing the most relevant matter at hand whilst being available to represent the Trust and formerly, LOV, in media interviews and on Twitter, on behalf of the fans.

How did you end up where you are right now? When did you know you wanted to work in sport?

My inspiration came from my school days, at Stonyhurst College, who I represented at 1st XI level football when I found myself wanting to write match reports after a fixture one week and it was then that I knew sports journalism was what I wanted to do for a living. My Dad was already in the industry at the time and once I’d told him what I wanted to do, he’s supported my progression no end and he remains a prominent inspiration behind my desire to succeed. As previously mentioned, I then went on to do a degree in Sports Media for which I’m now awaiting graduation. The various opportunities that have presented themselves during this time, regardless of the circumstances, have been supported immensely by those who immediately surround me, for that I am most grateful as they’re the ones who have got me to where I am today.

What are you excited about in your industry at the moment?

Whilst openings are restricted by the current climate, it’s no secret that there is a focus on the importance of an intake of today’s youth to help broaden demographics and encourage future generations to follow in their footsteps and take advantage of the digital age that we now live in. It’s an age which has created so many experiences designed for its primary users within the industry and has made dreams possible and for some, a reality as the sports media environment continues to grow, it further favours the youth of today. As this develops exponentially, there promises to be a hugely exciting surge in media careers for millennials.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to work in the sports industry?

The most important piece of advice I could provide is to not be afraid of following your dream. Don’t hold back from pursuing something which you are passionate about. If you give your all and are open minded, you will see results. Don’t be shy when it comes to putting yourself out there, broadening your knowledge of the industry, when meeting new people and in looking for work experience. You don’t know until you try so just go for it!
